1st Year Ruby Blitz

1st and 2nd year boys recently went to Fermoy Rugby Club to compete in their first blitz of the season. Unfortunately Charleville couldn’t make it so we had 2 opposing teams to play.

21-7 win against Fermoy
Brandon opened the scoring in our first game followed by Dylan Moynihan and Jack Sexton.

26-14 loss against Mitchelstown
Darius started our 2nd game with a try in a game that was tooth and nail. James Buckley scored the try of the day after some quality passing and finding a hole in the opposition defence.

15–5 Win against Mitchelstown
We then had a friendly game against Mitchelstown with the aim of getting more game time. This remained scoreless for the first half with tries coming from Josh and Dylan in the second half to end the day on a high.

Well done to all involved and thanks to Mr Noone for organising the games.

Student Awards 2017

Seán Kelly MEP was guest of honour at the recent Scoil Mhuire, Ceann Toirc Awards Ceremony. He commended students on the vast array of achievements which were acknowledged on the day and spoke of the importance of developing the mind, body and spirit in these challenging times.

The former GAA President was certainly impressed by the high standards achieved by the students and he reminded them that success is “99 per cent perspiration and one per cent inspiration”. Awards were presented in an array of areas including sports, performing arts, school spirit, exemplary attitude, initiative and the academic.

The awards for best Junior and Leaving Certificate were sponsored by AIB Kanturk and Mary Tattan was on hand for presentations to Daragh Healy Fitzgerald and Patrick Leiter respectively. The Junior Student of the Year Award was kindly sponsored by Twohig’s SuperValu Kanturk and was presented to Michelle O’Hanlon by Greg Muzyk.

Meanwhile the Senior Student of the Year Award was won by Jeremiah Sheehan who is now studying Science Education in University of Limerick. Tommy Mullane presented Jeremiah with his award, which was sponsored by Aspel’s Spar, Kanturk. The CEIST Award was presented to past pupil Rebecca Field who is now undertaking Early childhood Studies in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

In her address Ms Miriam Downey, Principal said that each student in Scoil Mhuire is encouraged give of their best to reach their maximum potential. “For those students, who are sitting in the audience observing the success of others, you too have talents and I would encourage you to aspire to be award winners next year”.

She also spoke of the fundamental change which followed the introduction of free secondary education in Ireland 50 years ago and the opportunities now open to young people which were not available to many of previous generations.

Musical interludes were provided by the recently formed Scoil Mhuire Choir, the Trad Group and Leaving Certificate Music students. Students Ruth O’Connor and David Alexandre also gave individual performances. Introductions and citations were read by Deputy Principal Denis Keating and staff members Mr Rickie O’Keeffe and Ms Mairéad Noonan.

Everything You Wanted to Know About European Language Week

European Language Week was celebrated in Scoil Mhuire from Monday Sept 25th to Friday Sept 29th 2017.

Transition Year students were set the task of organising events for the week and they truly rose to the challenge!

Activities included French Food Tastings for 3rd, 5th and 6th Yrs, a European Quiz and Spanish classes for 2nd Yrs, a French Treasure Hunt, French Crêpe-making and French Bingo for 1st Yrs, an Art competition for 1st, 2nd and 5th Yrs and finally the highlight of the week, the European Food Fair.

We were delighted this year to invite both St. Colman’s Boys National School Kanturk and the Kanturk Girls Convent of Mercy to come and taste some of the national dishes of France, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Poland and Italy, all prepared by our excellent Transition Years.

The atmosphere was wonderful and it was very much enjoyed by all. Well done to all our students involved!

Presentation to Mairéad Martin – Irish golfing star

On Wednesday last the school community of Scoil Mhuire came together to celebrate the remarkable achievements of student Mairead Martin.

Scoil Mhuire invited Mairead’s parents, Brendan and Karen along with members of Kanturk Golf Club (Ladies President Nora Daly and Ladies Captain Mary Fitzpatrick) to the presentation.

Principal Miriam Downey welcomed staff, students and invited guests and asked Deputy Principal, Denis Keating to outline the achievements of Mairead to date.

Mr Keating started by outlining that in Scoil Mhuire students are encouraged to achieve to the best of their ability in whatever talent they have been gifted. He continued that Mairéad is a wonderful role model in this regard.

Mr Keating then outlined her career to date; Mairéad got the golfing bug in October 2011, starting off with a handicap of 36. Through hard work and dedication Mairéad quickly lowered her handicap and is now playing off +2.

Her progress ensured that from 2012 to 2016, Mairéad had travelled all over Europe competing and representing her country.

In 2017 Mairéad was a member of the Irish U18 team for the European Championships which competed in Finland. She also finished tied 5th in the French U21 championship.

In July Mairéad won the Irish Girls Close Championship, played in Mallow. She dominated the competition and was never taken beyond the 15th hole. One week later Mairéad won the Leinster Ladies Championship in Donabate.

This was the second occasion that Mairead had won this event having become the youngest winner of the event in 2014. Mairéad was assisted in these two victories by her sister Áine who performed caddy duties for both events.

Mairéad continued her victory streak by sinking the winning putt for the Irish Ladies Team at the Home International matches in England, the first Irish team to win since 2004.

As a result of her victories over the summer, Mairéad was invited by Buckingham Palace and Prince Andrew to take part in the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy.

Mairéad competed with credit in this event in early September. Next on the list is the U18 World Championships to be held in Ontario, Canada at the end of September.

Mr Keating finished by congratulating Mairéad on her achievements and thanked all those involved in helping Mairead to date, her parents, coaches and sponsors.

Ms Downey then presented Aine with a token to acknowledge her part in Mairéads success. Finally Ms Downey presented Mairéad with a trophy to mark her success and a contribution towards her upcoming trip to Canada, on behalf of the entire Scoil Mhuire community.
