Convent Primary School Activities

unnamed-1_reducedTransition Year Students have hosted girls from the Kanturk Convent National School over recent weeks, for games and activities, in the Scoil Mhuire gym. Co-ordinated by Mr. Canty the transition year class has gained valuable experience in organising and running the events, while primary students have enjoyed the escape from the classroom and mixing with older students. It is hoped to continue this initiative after Christmas.

Open Day & Enrolment 2017

Open Day and Enrolment 2017Open Day took place on Saturday 22nd October. Blessed with wonderful weather we welcomed an enormous attendance of primary students and their families to view our school facilities and meet with the staff of Scoil Mhuire.

Activities on the day included maths activities, language plays, science magic shows, cooking demonstrations, snippets of the upcoming production of the ‘Sound of music’, project work in Technology and Construction Studies, fun and games in the gym as well as artistic make-up in the art room to tie in with the Halloween theme of the day.

Principal Ms Miriam Downey addressed the gathering where she outlined the caring student focused environment afforded to students in Scoil Mhuire as well as the outstanding academic track record of the school. Others who addressed the gathering included current first year students and Mrs Clare O’Keeffe who gave a very insightful talk of her experiences as a parent of past and current students in Scoil Mhuire.

Following on from Open Day we were delighted to receive very positive feedback from visitors to the school on the day. In particular the acknowledgement of the dedication of the Scoil Mhuire staff and feedback on the willing and happy disposition of our students on the day were very welcome indeed.

This positive feedback was supported with an increased enrolment for 2017 when we held on enrolment morning at the start of November. We look forward to welcoming this new cohort of students in September and working with them to ensure they each reach their full potential.

Scoil Mhuire, Kanturk Awards 2016

The achievements of students of Scoil Mhuire Mercy Secondary School Kanturk were recognised at the 2016 Awards Ceremony on Friday October 7th.

Deputy Principal Denis Keating acted as MC as the afternoon’s proceedings began with music by Bruno Mars and from the musical ‘Once’ performed by the school choir under the direction of music teacher Mary Farrell.

The special guest for the occasion was past pupil Professor Yvonne Buckley, Professor of Zoology at Trinity College Dublin.

Addressing the award recipients, the student body, school staff and guests, Professor Buckley said it was both an honour and a pleasure to be invited back to speak at and present the Scoil Mhuire awards. Before presenting the awards Professor Buckley congratulated the award winners, parents and staff on their wonderful talents and achievements. Professor Buckley acknowledged the part played by her education in Scoil Mhuire in helping her attain the position she holds today.

The introductions and citations were read by Ms Julia Barry and Mr. Rickie O’Keeffe and following these presentations School Principal Ms Miriam Downey addressed those present. She congratulated all the winners who have contributed in some remarkable way in their chosen award category. Ms Downey thanked all the musicians, singers and performers under the guidance of Mrs. Farrell for the afternoon’s entertainment, special guest Professor Buckley, MC Mr. Keating and Mr. O’Keeffe and Ms Barry for reading the citations.
