Recipient of two awards

Kane CollinsKane Collins, past pupil of Scoil Mhuire, Kanturk, was the recipient of two awards in November. On November 17th, Kane was awarded a UCD Entrance Scholars Award. This award is given to those first year students in UCD to recognise their academic achievement of 560 or more points in the Leaving Certificate. These awards are part of a range of UCD initiatives put in place to recognise exceptional students when they join the university. Kane is studying Science in UCD and will decide towards the end of the academic year the areas in which he will specialise. He was accompanied at the awards by his parents, Eoin and Mary, as well as Mr Denis Keating, Deputy Principal, Scoil Mhuire, who was presented with a commemorative plaque for the school to mark this achievement.

 

On November 19th, Kane was awarded an All Ireland Scholarship Award, sponsored by JP McManus. This scholarship programme was established in 2008 and to date in excess of 21 million euro has been paid to scholarship recipients. The awards ceremony was held in University of Limerick and Kane was once more accompanied by his parents, as well as Scoil Mhuire Principal, Ms Miriam Downey. A presentation was made to Kane by Mr McManus. Mr Patrick O’Donovan, TD Minister of State for Tourism and Sport also attended to congratulate award recipients. A total of 14 students from Cork City and County were among the 125 recipients on the day.

 

Paul O’Connell, Ireland’s third most capped rugby player and the joint thirteenth most capped international player in rugby union history, was guest speaker at the awards. Paul acknowledged the outstanding achievements of all award recipients and also noted that such high achievements do not come without hard work, drive and determination. Kane acknowledged the ‘very productive learning atmosphere in Scoil Mhuire, which he found to be an excellent school, as well as the wonderfully enthusiastic teachers’.  All in the Scoil Mhuire Community are very proud of Kane’s achievements and look forward to having him visit the school in the future to speak to students about life at third level education and in particular the study of Science.

11 A’s for Lisa

Lisa FinnCongratulation to Lisa Finn, who has attained 11 higher ‘A’ Grades in her Junior Certificate Examinations. Lisa had scored 10 ‘A’ grades when results were initially published, but following a review, Lisa has now been upgraded to 11 A’s. This is a truly outstanding achievement and is a great credit to Lisa, her parents and her teachers.

BT Young Scientist

bt logoCongratulations to the members of the Young Scientist team, Lisa Finn, Marie O’ Neill & Orla Gillespie, who have been selected to present their project in the RDS in January. The title of their BTYS project is ‘Síucra Tóg Go Bog É. 550 projects out of a total of 2091 projects were picked nationwide to go forward to the BTYS in the RDS in January.

The project is based on the negative effects of sugar on our health and how excessive sugar intake can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. The purpose of the project is that “we believe that if Irish preteens and teenagers are more aware of the maximum amount of sugar they should be having daily for their height, gender and age that this would have a significant positive impact on their health’.

The girls are really looking forward to representing Scoil Mhuire, Kanturk in the BTYS in January.

Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition 

Angus Beef CompetitionCongratulations to our two competing teams who have entered this competition. Our first team is composed of students Niamh Linehan, Maire O’Neil, Orla Gillespie, Kevin Healy and Evan O’Brien, while Caitlyn Heffernan, Lisa Finn and Jenny Buckley complete our second team.

The Irish Angus Producer Group devised a competition in an effort to further increase awareness of Certified Irish Angus Beef among consumers and to further promote the benefits to farmers and their families. The aim of the competition is to encourage young second level students to become involved to a greater extent in their families’ farms and to gain an understanding as to how beef produced on those family farms is marketed in a manner that represents the care and attention that has gone into the production and processing of their animals.

In entering the competition transition year students make a 3 minute video detailing the importance of agriculture to the school community and how they would plan for the promotion of the Certified Irish Angus in the area. Their videos contained trips to the local Mart in Kanturk where they offered samples of certified Irish Angus steak burgers to those in attendance, while they also visited local butchers as well as visiting farmers in the local area.

If their video is successful the students will be invited to an interview, in which a selection of entries will be invited to attend an exhibition event in Croke Park on 15th March 2017 which will be attended by Agriculture industry representatives.

If successful in Croke Park the group will be in with a chance to win five, six month old Angus calves which they will collect at the national ploughing championships in September. The students will rear these calves through to slaughter to coincide with their Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science project. As well as this students will be in with a chance of to receive an additional €2000 payment towards their further education.

All-Ireland Handball

All Ireland HandballCongratulations to Luke Barrett and Donal Jones who recently competed in the U15 All-Ireland Handball tournament. Luke and Donal had a good win in their semi-final over the Tyrone representatives, but lost out to Kilkenny in the final. Well done to both boys.
